UPDATE: El Guapo, Part Deux

Colon will be able to earn a bit more than $1 million if he makes the team out of spring training.  The total value of the deal will be around $7 million if he both makes the team and starts 30 or more games.  In addition, there is an opt-out clause in the contract as expected, which will allow Colon to become a free agent if he hasn't made it up to the big club by a certain date.  The date is not yet known.

ESPN.com is reporting that the Red Sox have signed Bartolo Colon to a minor league contract.  While he's a longshot to make the rotation (or even just open the season with the big league club), he certainly adds a good amount of depth to a position that is in need of some as a veteran of 11 seasons.  It's a good low risk signing by the Sox, as they can just stick him in the minors if it doesn't work out.

Colon's last two years have been his worst as he was a combined 7-13 with 107 K's and a 5.90 ERA in just 155 2/3 total innings for the 2006 and 2007 seasons.  However, he has been working hard to rehab his injured right arm this offseason and may still have a couple good years left in him; he is a two-time 20 game winner and the 2005 Cy Young Award winner, after all.  Apparently he's been getting shellacked in winter ball, though, so don't hold your breath expecting him to come in and be an ace.  At best, he'll be the fifth starter in the rotation; at worst, he'll spend the season in the minors.  He'll likely fall short of prying a rotation spot away from youngsters Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, but at least it will be fun to have another large Hispanic guy we can refer to as "El Guapo" occasionally suiting up for the Sox.  Perhaps we can even show our support by buying his quadruple extra large jerseys at The Souvenir Store.
