Romeo & Donte: The NFL's Literary Tag Team

ESPN.com is reporting that former Pats WR Donte Stallworth has agreed to a 7 year, $35 million deal with the Cleveland Browns, who, as you'll recall, are coached by former Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.  Get it now, the literary tag team reference?  Romeo of Shakespearean fame and Donte referring to the title character of Dante's Inferno (albeit spelled differently)?  Poor attempt at humor, I admit.  At any rate this is a pretty solid signing for the Browns, although it comes at a pretty steep price considering that Stallworth's never topped 1000 yards in any of his 6 seasons.  Stallworth's presence gives the Browns another legitimate deep threat aside Pro-Bowler Braylon Edwards, allowing them to put the sizable Joe Jurevicius at the slot position.  Those three combined with Kellen Winslow at TE, Derek Anderson at QB and Jamal Lewis at RB (as well as their very solid line) should make the Browns' offense even more prolific next season.  Now if they could only fix that defense, which was ranked 30th in the NFL and gave up just under 360 yards per game (to be fair, they did trade for DT Shaun Rogers and signed FA DT Corey Williams)...

This shouldn't come as a big shock to Pats fans as it was pretty apparent all ties had been severed after the team informed Donte they wouldn't be paying his option bonus a few weeks ago.  Last season with the Pats, Stallworth totaled 46 receptions, 697 yards and 3 TDs (including just one 100 yard receiving game), so it shouldn't be too difficult finding someone to replicate those numbers.  Priority #1 at WR for the Pats is re-signing Randy Moss, so they likely won't look to address filling the hole left by Donte's departure until Randy's back on the roster.  Comparably talented players that would presumably come at a cheaper price who may be on the Pats' radar include Marty Booker, Bryant Johnson, Devery Henderson and former Patriot Jabar Gaffney.  I still think Jabar will be back with the team one way or another; he had a pretty nice season last year with 36 receptions, 449 yards and 5 TDs and showed that he's a valuable contributor with increased playing time down the stretch and in the postseason.  The Patriots currently have Wes Welker, Chad Jackson, Kelley Washington and C.J. Jones under contract at wide receiver, so they've certainly got some work to do in that department this offseason.
