Goff Turns Heads at NFL Scouting Combine
The Eagle Tribune's Christopher Gasper, who regularly contributes pieces to Boston.com, recently wrote a nice feature on our friend and fellow St. John's Prep grad Jonathan Goff, former middle linebacker for the Vanderbilt Commodores. The piece captures Jon's quiet nature off the field and his superb skills on it very well, so take a look if it interests you. Goff, who has bulked up a bit since our SJP days to say the least, now stands at 6' 2" tall and 245 pounds. His stats at the Combine were as follows:
40 Yard Dash: 4.63 seconds (fifth best among linebackers)
Three Cone Drill: 6.86 seconds (fourth overall)
60 Yard Shuttle: 11.50 seconds (third overall)
Bench Press (225 Lbs.): 29 repetitions (second best among linebackers)
Portraying his usual stoicism, Goff summed up his outstanding performance at the Combine saying, "You can always do better. I think I did OK."
I bet other NFL prospects are wishing they did as "OK" as Big Jon. According to NFL scouts, who see Goff as the third best inside linebacker in the 2008 draft, Jon would be best suited as an ILB in a 4-3 formation because of his size, versatility and athleticism. The two time Vandy captain was also a two time All-SEC second-team selection. He added 6.5 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks and 2 interceptions to his 113 tackles (fourth in the SEC) for the 5-7 Commodores. Goff's only real downside according to the "experts" is that he lacks elite-level lower body strength, but that's something he can improve on in his first couple of years in the league.
In the article, Gasper explained that there is quiet and then there is Jonathan Goff quiet. He is certainly a man of few words and lets his actions on the field do the talking for him; however, he is even better at Madden than he is at actual football and it is hilarious to hear his deep baritone laugh as he delivers his respective opponent a whooping. Jon is a classy gentleman and we wish him the best of luck with the upcoming draft. We'd certainly love to see him sporting the Patriots colors; keep your fingers crossed.
