Gaffney Back to Pats, Offense Likely Set
Citing Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, The Boston Globe's Mike Reiss is reporting that the Patriots have agreed to a one year, $2 million deal with wide receiver Jabar Gaffney. Gaffney, who finished last season with 449 yards and 5 touchdowns, will assume the wideout spot vacated by Donte Stallworth, with Randy Moss on the other side of QB and Wes Welker remaining in the slot in three receiver sets. While it may seem to be a bit of a downgrade going from Stallworth to Gaffney in the starting lineup, keep in mind that Jabarrrr (try saying it with a pirate accent, it's actually quite fun) had virtually overtaken Stallworth as the team's third best receiver by the end of the season... and the fact that Donte really never lived up to the hype surrounding him when he first got here. The signing allows the Patriots to feel a lot more secure about the situation of their offense and focus on retooling the defense, which is still four to six bodies shy (including at least three starting positions) of where they need to be to start the season.
