Prelude to a Trade Rumor... Mets and Coco
As reported by the preeminent baseball blog MLB Trade Rumors, WFAN's Ed Coleman believes the Sox and Mets are currently working on a deal that would ship Coco Crisp to the Mets, presumably to replace the injured Moises Alou in left field and later, split time with both Alou in left and newly acquired Ryan Church in right field. Alou, who recently underwent surgery for a hernia, is expected to miss a few more weeks, and Church really struggles against LHPs (.229 AVG compared to .287 against righties). In return, the Mets would ship Angel Pagan, a 26 year old outfielder, to the Sox. Pagan hit .264 with 4 homers, 21 RBI, 21 R and 4 SB in 71 games with the Cubs last season.
Seems like pure speculation at this point, especially given the fact that no other major media sources (ESPN, SI, etc.) have picked up the story yet. Rotoworld speculates this could be a sign that there's just no market for Crisp, as the Sox would virtually be giving Coco away. Either way, this trade wouldn't seem to benefit the Sox in the least... Pagan wouldn't be anything more than a fourth outfielder and may possibly be ranked as their fifth skill-wise, as the front office / management seems pretty intent on having Bobby Kielty back up Manny, Jacoby/Coco, and JD. The Mets make for an intriguing trade partner, though, as they currently need extra help in the outfield with Alou out and likely to miss more time due to injury at some point and Church more of a platoon player rather than a bona fide starter, but I don't see Theo and Co. settling for the likes of Angel Pagan in a Crisp trade. Granted, his short career has been sidetracked by a series of unfortunate injuries, but I think they'd rather address their shortcomings in other areas (back end of the rotation, bullpen) than add to their stable of outfielders.

MLB Trade Rumors reports that this rumor has been revealed to be false by both the Boston Globe's Amalie Benjamin and Sox GM Theo Epstein. I knew this thing was too outlandish to be a possibility...
