DB Wilson Signs With Bucs; Say Bye Bye to Troy Brown
The Boston Globe's Mike Reiss is reporting that defensive back Eugene Wilson has agreed to a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who plan to use the versatile defender at corner. The NFL Network's Adam Schefter (he's really been busy this offseason, huh?) reports the deal includes $500K guaranteed money and could reach $2.2 mil. factoring in all incentives and bonuses. Interesting Wilson could only get a one year contract... he's only 27 and fellow former Patriots DB Randall Gay was rewarded with a four year pact worth much more per year from the New Orleans Saints. Wilson, who once appeared to be a star safety in the making, was eventually supplanted by James Sanders as the primary free safety alongside strong safety Rodney Harrison. Wilson likely wouldn't have been much more than a nickelback and CB/S backup next season had the Pats resigned him.
In other Pats news, the team has reportedly informed veteran WR Troy Brown that they will not be offering him a contract for the upcoming year, effectively cutting ties with the long time Patriot. At least part of the reasoning behind the Pats' decision appears to be the fact that it would take about $1 million to resign Brown because he's a 15 year vet. Another factor is that they're once again pretty deep at WR after recently resigning Randy Moss, Jabar Gaffney and Kelley Washington and welcoming in newly acquired special teams ace Sam Aiken. It's been reported that the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions have contacted Troy, so hopefully he catches on with a team needing a veteran leader on offense. We wish Troy the best of luck in his search for finding a new team.
