Saturday Sox Rumors
Couple great bits of info coming from MLB Trade Rumors today...
First, Manny is putting some of those tenets he's learned in The Secret to work and predicts that he will be Boston's left fielder for the next 4 years. Said Manny, "I’m gonna get four more years here, man. I’m going to get the two options and I’m going to get two more years." Manny is currently in the last guaranteed year of his 8 year, $160 million deal; the Sox have two consecutive club option years for 2009 and 2010 at $20 million per. Manny turns 36 in May... I don't think the Sox will invest $40 million over 2011 and 2012 for a 39 and 40 year old Manny Ramirez. For the next two seasons, however, Manny appears to remain a relative bargain (if he lives up to his .301-33-113 Bill James projection for the 2008 season).
Next, trade talks between the Sox and Oakland A's in regards to Coco Crisp are reportedly heating up again. Oakland GM Billy Beane is a big fan of Coco's defensive capabilities and the Athletics certainly have enough prospects to facilitate a deal. MLB Trade Rumors reports that Coco isn't likely to make the trip to Japan; this could potentially hold up a deal because it's been reported that teams would like to see that Crisp is fully healthy before completing a trade to bring him to their respective clubs...
Speaking of the Opener in Japan, it was reported today on WEEI 850 AM that Daisuke Matsuzaka's wife gave birth to the couple's second child, a baby boy, so it appears the Dice man will make an appearance in his native country.
