Red Sox Sign Japanese Starter Terumasa Matsuo
It was announced yesterday that the Sox inked RHP Terumasa Matsuo, formerly of the Shikoku Island League, to a minor league deal. While Matsuo likely won't be competing for a roster spot with the big club any time soon, he does feature a nice low 90s fastball (according to Sox Prospects) to go along with three other pitches he throws for strikes. And at just 26 years old, he still has plenty of time to develop. Matsuo was the MVP of the Shikoku Island League in 2007 thanks to his 15 wins, 1.72 ERA and 159 Ks and posted 11 wins with a 1.82 ERA and 134 Ks in 2006. Rotoworld notes that he hasn't faced quite the same level of competition as other Japanese imports who played in the Japanese Pacific and Central Leagues, but the Sox have been scouting him for a couple years and clearly like what they saw in the young righty. I assume he'll start at AAA Pawtucket, but from what I've read he hasn't been assigned to a roster yet.
