WBZ's Bob Lobel to be Bought Out

Boston media icon Bob Lobel's 3 decade run at WBZ has reportedly come to an end.  In a move that will result in other CBS news mainstays Joyce Kulhawiak and Scott Wahle being shown the proverbial door, CBS is cutting 15% of its Brighton work force and buying out the contracts of several of its higher paid TV personalities in order to reduce costs after a down year for the CBS Corporation.

For those of us too young to have seen Lobel during the heyday of local station sports broadcasting, Steve Buckley has a very passionate and eloquent piece in today's Boston Herald recounting the life and times of Mr. Lobel.  Boston Dirts Dogs also has some glowing things to say about Lobie, although I should note that their interpretation is a bit skewed due to the fact that Bob's been a FOBDD (friend of Boston Dirt Dogs) for several years and has plugged their site on more than a few occasions.  It's a sad way for one of Boston's longest tenured sports anchors to go out, but like many other folks out there who've been at least casual observers of Bob Lobel's nightly segments, I believe his several well-reported indiscretions and noticeable decline in quality over the past few years make the move a bit easier to stomach.

Say what you will about his off-the-air goings on, but Lobel has left an indelible mark on the Boston sports scene and the knowledge he's amassed over his 30+ years in the business will likely be missed in the coming months and years as we enter into what appears to be a modern golden age in Boston sports.
