Red Sox's Kyle Snyder Designated for Assignment

MLB Trade Rumors has a great deal of info on Kyle Snyder being DFA'd.  The move was made to clear up room for Josh Beckett, who came off the DL and started today's game against Toronto.  The 30 year old Snyder, who is out of options and cannot be made to accept a spot on the Paw Sox roster without clearing waivers, has been a disappointment this season in an admittedly extremely small sample size (2 games, 1.2 IP, 21.60 ERA, 2.40 WHIP, .333 BAA).  The Sox have a 10 day period in which to negotiate a trade, release him, or put him on waivers.  MLBTR predicts that the Sox would be hard pressed to find a trade partner and that Snyder will clear waivers and ultimately accept a minor league appointment with the team.

Snyder was generally effective last season in 54.1 innings (3.81 ERA, 1.77 WHIP, 41 K's, 45 hits, 32 walks), but he still has a career ERA and WHIP of 5.57 and 1.55 respectively, so this move isn't entirely unexpected.  I don't share the sentiments of many other speculators that Snyder has no chance of catching on with another big league club; the Rangers come to mind as a definite possibility as their entire pitching staff is spread thin and currently decimated by injuries.  The Astros, Cardinals, Mets, Nationals, Orioles, Phillies, Rockies and Tigers are several more clubs that could use a back-end rotation guy, spot starter, or long or middle reliever that makes just $535K.  There are just too many teams dealing with injuries or lack of depth in the rotation and/or bullpen to suggest that Snyder wouldn't garner even a little bit of buzz.  Either way, this isn't the last of the moves that Theo, Tito, etc. will make in regards to the pitching staff in the coming days and weeks; Mike Timlin will be coming off the DL soon and Bartolo Colon is looking more and more worthy of a roster spot (if not the 5th position in the rotation).  Prime candidates to experience the same fate as Snyder, whatever it may be, are David Aardsma and Bryan Corey.  Stay tuned.
