Buchholz to the DL; Van Every to Boston

Clay Buchholz has been placed on the DL and Jon Van Every has been called up to the majors. A broken fingernail on his right middle finger is what caused Buchholz to be put on the disabled list. This could be to heal his finger or it may just be a phantom DL trip to keep Buchholz's innings down, as he only pitched 148 total innings last season. The Red Sox do not like to increase a pitcher's workload by more than 30 innings from one season to the next, so this trip will help Buchholz to keep his innings down while also allowing Bartolo Colon to slide into the rotation at some point next week. Colon has a clause in his contract stating that he can opt out if not with the big league team by June 1st. With the off day Thursday, I would expect Dice-K and Tim Wakefield to take their normal turns on Friday and Saturday, with Beckett and Lester moving up a day to Sunday and Monday (this would be normal rest for them because of the off day), allowing Colon to pitch Tuesday.

Jon Van Every was needed today due to the rash of minor injuries to our outfield players. The injuries to J.D. Drew (wrist) and Coco Crisp (headache/nausea) have suddenly left the Red Sox outfield very thin. The hope is that Van Every arrives in time to play tonight as he is scheduled to hit 9th and play center field. Van Every can play all three outfield positions and has a decent bat, hitting .287 with 6 home runs and 20 RBIs. He spent most of his career in the Cleveland organization, signing with the Sox this past offseason. This will be his first trip to the major leagues, so let's hope he makes the most of it.
