Red Sox Minor League Review - May 2008
The minor league player of the month is back for May, where we saw some really impressive stats by some of the players. We've already seen some of the young guns step up and have key performances for the big club in the first two months of the season, so we're back to give you a glimpse of a few more guys to keep your eye on in the coming days and weeks.
Pawtucket Red Sox
May Record: 19-11
Hitter of the Month: Jeff Bailey - .339 BA, 7 2B, 13 HR, 33 RBI, .430 OBP
Pitcher of the Month: Chris Smith - 9 G, 10 IP, 11 K, 4 SV
The hitting in Pawtucket was hot this month, Chris Carter barely missed out on player of the month honors, smashing all 10 of his home runs in May. Brandon Moss hit 5 in only 10 games and could be starting to come on strong; look for both to put up big June numbers. The pitching was fairly weak, although we can expect that to get better with Justin Masterson recently making his first start in Pawtucket.
Portland Sea Dogs
May Record: 16-13
Hitter of the Month: Bubba Bell - .431 BA, 3 2B, 6 HR, 13 RBI
Pitcher of the Month: Michael Bowden - 37 IP, 3-1, 1.22 ERA, 29 K
The hitting really picked up in Portland this month, with both Bubba Bell and Zach Daeges hitting over .400 in May, which, needless to say, is simply ridiculous. You could make the case for each, but Bell got the player of the month honors by showing more power. Bowden has been unbelievable this month and the only thing you could ask for from him is more strikeouts. The pitching has tailed off a little while the hitting has picked up, something that was to be expected, but this level has quite a few guys worth keeping an eye on.
Lancaster JetHawks
May Record: 15-16
Hitter of the Month: Josh Reddick - .339 BA, 4 2B, 6 3B, 6 HR, 19 RBI
Pitcher of the Month: Richie Lentz - 10 G, 19.1 IP, 3.26 ERA, 31 K
Reddick barely beat out Jorge Jimenez for the award this month because just like Bubba Bell, he showed greater power. Some pitchers have started to figure Lancaster out, like Adam Mills and Tony Bajoczky, but they could not top Lentz's ridiculous strikeout numbers. I would expect more of the same, with the hitters outshining the pitchers here.
Greenville Drive
May Record: 15-14
Hitter of the Month: Ryan Kalish - .290 BA, 4 2B, 2 HR, .353 OBP, 6 SB
Pitcher of the Month: Terumasa Matsuo - 31 IP, 2-1, 2.61 ERA, 33 K
Kalish seems to have gotten over the wrist injury that kept him out the beginning part of April and really seemed to cause some of his struggles. The rest of the team is young and although they are not tearing the cover off the ball yet, each one seems to be showing signs of improvement. Yamaico Navarro was the runner up to Kalish this month. Matsuo is a Japanese Independent League signing who had a really tough April but turned it on strong in May. Chris Province, Bryce Cox and Felix Doubront all pitched very well for the Drive this month and were in contention for this award.
In related news, we will have an MLB Draft preview coming up this week to go along with our draft coverage on Thursday and Friday, so get ready to have even more Sox players to root for.
