Red Sox Weekly Recap 5/25 - 5/31
5/25 at Oakland Athletics (L 6-3)
Not a whole lot to say about this sweep in Oakland. The Sox just did not play well - Manny had 3 hits and Big Papi smashed a homer in this game, but besides that, there's really nothing to talk about. Lester failed in his bid to get his second straight no-no, but who can be surprised by that?
5/26 at Seattle Mariners (W 5-3)
This game was really tight most of the way. The Sox opened it up in the 8th to the tune of a 5-1 lead and the closest the Mariners could claw back was 5-3. Bartolo Colon pitched very well, throwing 7 innings of 4 hit, 1 run and 4 strikeout ball. If he can continue to pitch like this, he is going to be a really big asset to this team.
5/27 at Seattle Mariners (L 4-3)
Number 499 jumped off the bat of Manny Ramirez in the top of the sixth, tying the game at 3, but the Sox would eventually surrender that lead. Manny's homer, a shot to right-center ,makes me think that we will not have to wait much longer for number 500 because when he starts to go the other way, he seems to get into a special zone. In some more negative news, Dice-K hurt his shoulder in the game and they are calling it a mild strain. He was placed on the DL for precautionary measures, leaving an opening in the rotation for Tuesday.
5/28 at Seattle Mariners (L 1-0)
This was a very boring game to watch as the Sox only had 2 hits the entire game. Erik Bedard was really on top of his game with his fastball working in and out of the zone and his devastating curve finishing off our hitters. Not to be lost in this boredom was a great game thrown by Tim Wakefield; his line of 8 innings, 1 run and 8 strikeouts was very impressive. It stinks he took the loss on a solo homer by Yuniesky Betancourt.
5/30 at Baltimore Orioles (W 5-2)
It took extras to decide this one, with Mike Lowell singling in Manny Ramirez in the top of the thirteenth inning. This marathon game was actually fairly sloppy and probably should have been decided sooner. The Sox stole six bases against the Baltimore battery, with Jacoby Ellsbury accounting for 3 of those. I personally thought the game was over when Mike Timlin loaded the bases in the bottom of the twelfth, but in a sign that he may be starting to showing signs of life, Timlin battled out of it and gave the Sox a chance to win in the top of the thirteenth.
5/31 at Baltimore Orioles (W 6-3)
500 - Manny Ramirez hit his 500th homer to deep right-center field in the top of the seventh, increasing our lead at the time to 5-3. Considering the circumstances, I was surprised by how little Manny showed off because he only walked about 15 feet towards first before beginning his home run trot. Overall, this was a great game not only for the 500th home run, but because it puts the Sox in position to sweep the Orioles after playing poorly on the West Coast swing of this trip.
