Former Bruins Metropolit and Auld Find New Homes on Day 1
Glen Metropolit and Alex Auld, both formerly of the Boston Bruins and both unrestricted free agents, have agreed to terms on contracts that will have them playing for the Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators, respectively.
Metropolit, who signed a 2-year deal with the Flyers (financial terms were not disclosed), was reportedly high on the Bruins' offseason priorities list. The B's had an offer on the table for the 34-year-old, but he apparently liked Philly's offer better. Metro was one of just 3 Bruins to appear in all 82 games last season and totaled 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) over that span. With the surplus of young centers and wingers that have recently been called up or are still being seasoned in Providence, the B's shouldn't miss Metro's production too much, but it's still disappointing to see him go.
With both Tim Thomas and Manny Fernandez in the fold at the goaltender position for next year (and Tuuka Rask waiting in the wings for the 2009-10 season, perhaps), the Bruins had likely not even entertained the notion of re-signing Auld due to the fact that his presence doesn't appear to be needed at this point. Joining the Sens on a 2-year deal that will pay him a total of $2 million, Auld could presumably challenge Martin Gerber for the starting job at some point next season. It's a nice opportunity for the guy who filled in admirably in Manny Fernandez' absence in 23 games for the B's last season.
Meanwhile, Marian Hossa, who the Bruins are rumored to be targeting with an apparent 12-year, $100 million deal, is expected to make a decision tomorrow. Stay tuned.
