Red Sox Weekly Recap 7/6 - 7/12

7/6 at New York Yankees (5-4 L 10th)
Another great start from Wakefield (6.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 K) gets crapped away by the bullpen with Lopez (.1 IP, 1 ER) and Papelbon (.2 IP, 1 ER) doing the honors this time. Youk and Casey had 2 hits apiece while Ellsbury, Drew, Lowell and Coco combined to go 0-for-14. It would have been nice to see the Sox do better than 2-for-4 against the Yanks, but coming off a brutal road trip, there was a lot to like in this series.

7/7 vs. Minnesota Twins (1-0 W)
Dice-K's (7.1 IP, 0 ER, 5 K) been looking better and better ever since getting shelled in the first inning against the Cardinals back on June 21st. He's still a bit inconsistent and is averaging 3.6 walks per start, but there's no reason to think he can't put it together for a solid second half. Manny collected 2 of the Sox' 7 hits and accounted for the lone RBI of the game as he drove in Dusty.

7/8 vs. Minnesota Twins (6-5 W)
Nice to see another team's bullpen collapse once in a while, eh? Lester (7.1 IP, 5 ER, 6 K) seemed to struggle at times, but he was taken off the hook when Minnesota relievers Dennys Reyes and Matt Guerrier combined for 4 earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Manny connected on his 17th homer of the season and Youk upped his average to .314 thanks to a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

7/9 vs. Minnesota Twins (18-5 W)
I don't know what's sweeter, the fact that the Sox put up 18 runs, or the fact that they completed the sweep of the Twins. Beckett (5 IP, 5 ER, 2 K) didn't look sharp, but Livan Hernandez (4.1 IP, 6 ER, 2 K) looked even worse. The Sox totaled 23 hits with every starter having at least one hit. Ellsbury, Dusty, Youk, Manny, Lowell, Casey and Lugo all had multi-hit games.

7/11 vs. Baltimore Orioles (7-3 L)
Buchholz (5 IP, 4 ER, 6 K) made his first start at the major league level since May 12 and took the loss after a tough outing. Thanks to a pair of clean innings from Lopez and Aardsma, the Sox were still in it up until the 8th and 9th when Delcarmen and Timlin gave up 3 combined earned runs. Brian Roberts led the way for the visiting Orioles with 3 hits and 2 runs scored out of the leadoff spot.

7/12 vs. Baltimore Orioles (12-1 W)
Highlighted by Youk hitting "his first career grand slam... EVER" (credit Jerry Remy for that gem), the Sox posted double digits for the second time in 4 days. With one of the most unique names in the game, O's starter Radhames Liz gave up 8 earned runs in 2.1 innings. Drew and Manny went yard to help give Wakefield (7 IP, 1 ER, 6 K) his 6th win of the season.
