Manny's Latest Media Revelations
We'd like to try something new here at Boston Sports Buzz. Similar to the unique format employed by such fine sites as Fire Joe Morgan, we're going to start taking a look at articles, columns, statements, player comments, etc. and interjecting our own opinions every couple lines or so. It might be unfair to pick these things apart because the various writers and speakers have no chance to defend themselves, but it's funny, so who cares?
For our first venture into this branch of blogging, we'll dissect Manny's most recent comments to The Boston Herald's Bradford:
To be honest with you, I don’t know, I want to stay in Boston, but I want to sit down after the season with ownership and see what my future is going to be in Boston.
Does anyone else feel incredibly insecure with the fact that Manny tossed a prelude of "I don't know" onto his statement of "I want to stay in Boston?" I think a little more decisiveness would be a decent idea if you want everyone to be happy about you getting $20 million to wear the Sox uniform next season. Call me crazy. And if you want to have a sit down after the season, why are you making such a big deal about it right now?
Let’s see, but the ball is in my court. If they don’t pick it up, I’m a free agent and I’ll go play somewhere else. We’ll see.
Actually, the ball is in the ownership's court. That's the way "club options" typically work.
I want to know what’s my situation. I want no more (expletive) where they tell you one thing and behind your back they do another thing.
Here's "what's the situation" (apparently career earnings of upwards of $200 million can't buy you good diction) - the Sox want to see if you can produce and keep yourself relatively in check this season before they make the decision of whether or not to commit $20 million to the 37-year-old version of yourself. As for the "(expletive) where they tell you one thing and behind your back they do another thing," when has this ever applied to Manny Ramirez? The only thing I can think of is when Manny was placed on irrevocable waivers in 2003, but if you remember correctly, Manny forced the Sox' hands on this one and was basically one manager's meeting shy of demanding a trade out of Boston. Plus, as far as we know, the Sox ownership has been nothing but forthright with their befuddling slugger up to this point.
I think I’ve earned that respect, for a team to sit down with me and tell me this is what we want, this is what we want to do.
What respect do you think you've earned? The respect that comes from refusing to pinch-hit in the midst of a pennant race? The respect that comes from claiming to be sick and unable to play and then being spotted partying with a member of the New York Yankees that same night? The respect that comes from shoving a 66-year-old employee of the Boston Red Sox to the ground because he isn't immediately able to accommodate your every whim? Yeah, you've certainly earned the respect of the Red Sox organization and their fans.
It’s not to protect myself. I just want to know what my future is going to be. I just want them to tell me, ‘We’re going to take it year by year,’ or, ‘We’re going to do this.’ That’s fine. Just so I know what’s going on with my situation.
If you want to know what your future is going to be, maybe showing a little more respect and appreciation to the organization and ownership group as opposed to openly questioning their motives at every turn might help your cause. And once again, if you claim to want to talk at the end of the season, why would they tell you "We're going to take it year by year" or "We're going to do this" right now, at the All-Star break? Talk about confused logic.
Anybody, but I don’t want no more (expletive), like they always do where they tell you one thing and they do another. I’m getting too old for that game.
This is the second time we've heard about the elusive "telling you one thing and doing another" situation but we've yet to be supplied with an actual example of how this has actually happened to Manny. Shocking.
No, because I’m in the driver’s seat. If they don’t pick it up, I’m a free agent. So (sitting down with the Red Sox after the season) is what I want to do.
Does Manny really think he's "in the driver's seat?" After all, it's still a CLUB OPTION. Can't you just see Scott Boras (excuse me, he's switched agents yet again and is now represented by Legacy Sports Group) calling Manny on his cell - probably while ManRam is planted in the Green Monster between innings - and telling him he's in total and complete control of this situation just so Manny can maintain some inflated sense of importance? I certainly can... On second thought, Manny probably doesn't need any of his agents to stroke his ego so that he can maintain his consistently-high sense of self-importance. He seems to handle that just fine on his own.
