A Few Patriots Signings to Announce
It's looking to be a slow day for news, so let's catch you up on a few Pats signings:
Anthony Clement, OT - The Pats likely signed the 32-year-old offensive tackle as insurance in case Nick Kaczur faces some sort of disciplinary action stemming from his recent arrest. A veteran of 10 seasons, Clement has started in 107 games in his career. He started all 16 games for the Jets last year and given the way the offensive line played late in the playoffs, a little depth on the line wouldn't be a terrible thing.
Chris Dunlap, WR - Originally signed by the Pats in May of 2007, Dunlap was released by the team just several months later in September. In his most productive season at Georgia Tech, Dunlap had 9 receptions for 101 yards. Dunlap will be hard pressed to find a job on offense but could presumably compete for a spot on special teams. Either way, look for him to wind up getting released once again.
Shawn Crable, LB - One of two 2008 third round selections whose signings were announced yesterday, Crable will most likely see some time at outside linebacker next season. The Michigan product is versatile and he's been praised for being a solid pass rusher. He'll compete with Pierre Woods for reserve time behind Mike Vrabel and Adalius Thomas.
Kevin O'Connell, QB - Also selected in the third round, O'Connell seems destined to spend the 2008-09 season as the third string quarterback behind Tom Terrific and Matt "Not So Terrific" Cassel. He was unimpressive to say the least in college, but the Pats haven't hidden the fact that they look at him as Brady's long-term backup. Plus, he can't really be that much of a downgrade from Cassel, can he? O'Connell's physical and his passing was accurate enough to help him move up in scouts' eyes on draft day, not to mention the fact that he'll give us that much-needed Irish name on the Pats squad.
Jonathan Wilhite, CB - The Pats signed their fourth round pick just under a week ago now and it appears that they're hoping for semi-big things from him in the not-too-distant future. He was somewhat of an injury liability in his time at Auburn, but he's quick and tackles well. He won't see much time at corner right away but should have an impact in other areas as a rookie.
UPDATE, 5:27 PM: The Patriots just announced their signing of second round pick Terrence Wheatley. The corner got a 4-year deal with an $890,000 signing bonus and is expected to play a significant role in the Pats' secondary this year.
