Red Sox Weekly Recap 7/20 - 7/26

7/20 at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (5-3 L)
Darren Oliver gets the win?! Really? Seriously, the guy's like 50 years old and is working on his eighth team. I guess there's not a much more appropriate way for a 3-game sweep at the hands of the Angels to end. Wakefield gave up 4 earned over 7 innings, including homers to Vlad Glad and Torii Hunter, and Delcarmen gave up another run in an inning of work. K-Rod picked up his league-leading 40th save of the season, while Dusty had a solid day for the visiting Sox with 3 hits and a run.

7/21 at Seattle Mariners (4-0 W)
Wanna know how impressive Jon Lester's been this season and just how valuable he is to the team? Heading into last night's game, he was 3-0 in the 4 games he's started following a Red Sox loss. Tonight, Lester lasted 7.1 innings, didn't give up an earned run, and struck out 6 batters. Batting out of the 8th and 9th spots in the lineup, Tek and Lowrie had 2 RBIs apiece. Pap came in with 5 outs to go and picked up his 29th save of the season.

7/22 at Seattle Mariners (4-2 W)
Only 2 members of the starting lineup went hitless (Crisp and Youk) as Dice-K lasted 7.1 innings to pick up his team-leading 11th win of the season. He struck out 6, walked 3, and gave up just 2 earned runs. J.D. smacked his 18th homer of the season and both he and Lowell had 2 hits apiece. Okie and Pap combined to hold the Mariners hitless and close out the 8th and 9th with clean frames.

7/23 at Seattle Mariners (6-3 W 12th)
Buchholz (5.1 IP, 3 ER, 7 K) rebounded nicely from a rough last couple of outings as he limited the Mariners to 7 hits. The Sox took the lead early thanks to a Youk base knock and an Ichiro fielding error, but found themselves knotted at threes after 6. Ellsbury started off a 3-run top of the 12th with a single to right, J.D. walked 2 batters later, Lowell knocked them in, Youk reached and made it to third, Casey got him in on a base hit... the rest, as they say, is history. The timely clutch hitting was on display tonight.

7/25 vs. New York Yankees (1-0 L)
What better way to follow up a 3-game sweep of the Mariners than by losing on a flimsy Jason Giambi dribbler? Beckett (7 IP, 1 ER, 6 K) looked as sharp as he's looked in a while, but Sox nemesis Joba Chamberlain (7 IP, 0 ER, 9 K) was just more dominant tonight. The Sox collected just 6 hits, struck out 12 times (only Dusty and Lowrie didn't whiff), and left an astounding 14 men on base. In his first game back from a 45-game absence, Big Papi went 1-4 at the plate.

7/26 vs. New York Yankees (10-3 L)
Wake (5.1 IP, 6 ER, 3 K) got pretty roughed up while his Yankees counterpart, Andy Pettitte, struck out 7 over 6 innings to pick up the win. Papi was 2-4 with an RBI in his second game back, but the rest of the team was only able to bang out another 4 hits to help him out. Masterson came on in relief of Wakefield and gave up 3 straight hits and an earned run, while Hansen gave up 3 earned runs of his own in 0.2 IP.
