Red Sox Weekly Recap 7/27 - 8/2
7/27 vs. New York Yankees (9-2 W)
Thank the Baseball Gods for Jon Lester (and Sidney Ponson, Lester's Yankees counterpart, to some degree) - Lester (7 IP, 2 ER, 8 K) continued his torrid second half pace and picked up his 9th win of the season. It's also the 4th win he's earned in the 5 starts he's had following a Sox loss. The Sox had 5 players with at least 2 hits, including Papi (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI), Ellsbury (3-for-4, 2B, R) and Manny (3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI).
7/28 vs Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (7-5 L)
Tough outing for Dice-K, who lasted just 5 innings and gave up 6 earned runs to go with 3 strikeouts. The bulk of the damage came on homers from Torii Hunter and Casey Kotchman. Only leadoff man Dustin Pedroia was held hitless, while Papi added another 2 hits. Manny made it interesting with a solo shot in the 9th off K-Rod, but it was too little, too late as the Sox left 18 men on base.
7/29 vs Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (6-2 L)
Buchholz (6.1 IP, 5 ER, 5 K) lasted longer than he had in his previous 6 starts, but tonight was all about John Lackey. Lackey (9 IP, 2 ER, 4 K) had a no-hitter heading into the 9th (reminiscent of Muss' no-hit bid, which was broken up by Carl Everett, several years back), but Pedroia and Youk had different plans for the outcome of the game. Pedey singled to left after Lackey got the first out in the 9th, then Youk followed it up with a 2-run shot. Good stuff (in spite of the fact that it was still a loss).
7/30 vs Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (9-2 L)
Alright, it's time to ask - what's up with Josh Beckett? In 5 July starts, he lasted at least 7 innings twice and gave up less than 3 earned runs once. The stats are somewhat skewed due to the fact that 4 of those 5 starts included 2 starts apiece against the Angels and Yankees, but there's no doubt that Beckett (5.1 IP, 7 ER, 8 K) hasn't been quite as sharp as starts past. Garrett "Old Man-derson" Anderson, who's really been heating up since the start of the second half, hit his 11th homer of the season for the bad guys.
8/1 vs. Oakland Athletics (2-1 W 12th)
Not a much better way to begin the P.M. (Post-Manny) Era. Also not a much better team to face after being swept by the Angels. Wake (6.1 IP, 0 ER, 4 K) pitched as well as you could ask, but Okajima handed him the no-decision after giving up his 5th homer of the season. After scoring a run earlier in the game, new addition Jason Bay tripled and was subsequently driven in by Jed Lowrie. Nice start to his Boston career.
8/2 vs. Oakland Athletics (12-2 W)
All Jon Lester (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 K) knows how to do is win. He hasn't lost a game since late May and has won 7 of his last 10 starts. The offense showed up in a big way as Youk homered twice and had 4 RBI, Bay hit his first homer in a Sox uniform and had 3 RBI and Lowrie had a bases-clearing double. Masterson and recently-recalled Chris Smith combined for scoreless 8th and 9th innings.
