A Cheesehead No More - Favre Dealt to Jets for Pick
Well, the Jets just got a whole lot better.
According to multiple media sources, the New York Jets have acquired Brett Favre for a conditional 2009 draft pick (reportedly a 4th round pick that could eventually become a 1st rounder depending on how well the Jets do and how much Favre plays next year). Needless to say, the move will have significant implications in terms of how the AFC East plays out this coming season.
It's hard to believe this is the best the Packers could get for a future Hall of Famer and (still) one of the most effective passers in the league. Sure the Jets will probably have Favre on the roster for just a year or two, but given the fact that the pick won't bump up to a 1st rounder unless New York makes it to the Super Bowl, the Jets just landed a guaranteed top 15 QB for no more than a 2nd round pick. (Wonder how Bucs coach Jon Gruden and Viks coach Brad Childress are taking that news...) New York has two very solid receiving options in Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, both of whom will see a substantial uptick in production with Favre - as opposed to Pennington or Clemens - under center (plus, former Steeler Alan Faneca should give the O-line a huge boost). The running game still leaves a lot to be desired with Thomas Jones as the primary option, but the respect Favre commands due to his gun-slinging ways should free up Julius' brother to break off some bigger runs.
The Jets are still no more than a fringe playoff contender and aren't likely to challenge the Patriots for the top spot in the East, but Jets fans have more cause to be hopeful for the upcoming season than they've enjoyed in a long time. It's believed that the Jets will trade or release oft-injured Chad Pennington in order to clear up cap space.
Somewhere, the world's biggest Chad Pennington fan, Mike Greenberg, just shed a tear.
