Red Sox Weekly Recap 8/3 - 8/9

8/3 vs. Oakland Athletics (5-2 W)
How do you rebound from being swept by the Angels? By sweeping the A's, of course. Dice-K only made it through 6 innings, but with 8 Ks and just 2 walks, he looked sharper than he has in previous starts. Youk and Bay had 2 hits apiece, while Lowrie and Crisp had a pair of RBI each. Haven't been able to say this a ton this year, but Okie and Delcarmen pitched scoreless 7th and 8th innings, leaving the 9th to Pap, who picked up his 31st save.

8/4 at Kansas City Royals (4-3 L)
Gil Meche makes $11 freaking million per season and this may have been the first time he's ever looked like it in his career against the Sox. The 55 million dollar man held the Sox to 5 hits over 6 innings, striking out 9 in spite of issuing 5 free passes. Buchholz (6 IP, 4 ER, 4 K) got into trouble early again, allowing 3 runs to score in the 3rd inning. With the Sox leaving 21 runners on base, this one likely would have had a similar finish even if Clay had tossed a gem.

8/5 at Kansas City Royals (8-2 W)
Great rebound win - it's nice to see the club ace be the stopper once in a while. Beckett (6.2 IP, 2 ER, 7 K) pitched well and Bay collected 4 hits to go along with his 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Batting out of the 9-hole, Ellsbury went 2-for-4 and stole a pair of bases. The Sox pitching staff held the Royals to 5 hits and Lowrie picked up another 2 RBI thanks to a big 7th inning triple. Timlin pitched 1.1 innings, giving up just a single hit.

8/6 at Kansas City Royals (8-2 W)
The Sox grabbed 3 runs in the 5th thanks to a Lowrie 2-RBI double and an Ortiz RBI single and never relinquished that lead. Wake (6 IP, 1 ER, 6 K) absolutely baffled Royals batters en route to his 7th win of the season and the knuckler was so effective that he gave up just 4 hits in 6 innings. For reference, Delcarmen and Pap gave up 4 hits combined in just 2 innings. In a sign that the Sox view him as a valuable 8th inning contributor, Masterson set up Pap heading into the 9th.

8/8 at Chicago White Sox (5-3 L)
Not exactly the way you want to start a 4-game set against the AL Central leading ChiSox. Lester (7 IP, 4 ER, 2 K) pitched well enough over 7 innings, but a lack of scoring (all 3 runs came across on a Pedroia homer in the 8th) handed him his first loss in over 2 months. Soft-throwing Mark Buehrle allowed just 1 earned run over 7 innings while striking out 8. Old friend Orlando Cabrera did the bulk of the damage with 2 hits and 2 RBI.

8/9 at Chicago White Sox (6-2 W)
The Sox collected 14 hits to help Dice-K (8 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) pick up his 13th win. The lineup boasted 5 multi-hit games, led by Ortiz and Ellsbury, who had 3 hits apiece. In a clear example of how not to cover first on a close play, Jose Contreras (1.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 K) ruptured his left Achilles' tendon running to the bag, sidelining the starter for the next 9 months. It's hard to be upset with a win, but for the second time in the past 4 games, the Sox left 19 men on base.
