Hitting the Links - Red Sox, Patriots

Red Sox
  • Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski is reportedly resting comfortably after undergoing triple bypass surgery. Yaz will be turning 69 on Friday. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
  • Josh Beckett's next start will be pushed back after he experienced a tingling sensation in his right hand. For those of you keeping score at home, that makes 2 relatively un-masculine injuries (along with blister issues) that have kept Beckett from making starts throughout his Red Sox career.
  • Curt Schilling is leaning toward calling it a career after this year. Time to get all those "Vote Curt Schilling for Massachusetts Senate" poster boards printed up...
  • Tim Wakefield played catch for the second time since landing on the DL but no timetable has been set yet for his return. Thanks to especially excellent pitching from Dice-K and Lester, they're not rushing him back.
  • Pap is suffering from headaches and it has nothing to do with his constant lack of happiness regarding the amount of money he's making. The star closer is dealing with migraines but doesn't think it should affect his ability or availability.
  • Bartolo Colon's rehab just keeps hitting snags. He left his most recent start after just one inning after becoming "sick to his stomach." Hitting the pregame buffet a little too hard, Bartolo?
  • And now for the most important news of all: Julio Lugo has begun swinging a bat. The season's saved! Our $9 million per year pinch running specialist is on his way back!
Patriots
  • Tom Brady was practicing without a boot or brace yesterday. It was previously reported that the injury was  on the same leg that caused problems for him during the Super Bowl. He's not expected to play in the next preseason game, but most fears have been allayed by this most recent encouraging news. Looks like the season's back on track, sports fans.
  • Marcus Pollard was released yesterday. According to Belichick, the reason behind the move was that "it wasn't really going to work out here the way that we had hoped and that he had hoped." Detailed response, as always.
  • Brandon Meriweather is expected to be fully healthy by the start of the regular season. Good news for Pats fans, bad news for opposing offenses.
  • Former Patriots owner James Orthwein passed away at the age of 84. Orthwein owned the Pats for two years, selling the franchise to Robert Kraft in 1994.
