Sox Add David Ross to Catching Mix
Per Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox have signed released Cincinnati Reds catcher David Ross to a minor league deal. In 134 at bats with the Reds this season, the 31-year-old Ross batted .231 with 3 HR, 13 RBI and a .381 OBP. In order to be eligible for the postseason, Ross must be promoted to the MLB roster by August 31st. Rosenthal expects Ross to assume the role of third catcher behind both Tek and Cash.
In other Sox news, Buchholz was demoted yesterday after his most recent rough outing. It's believed that the team wants him to get a couple of starts at Portland before their season ends so he can regain a bit of confidence before rejoining the Sox, presumably in a bullpen role. Due to the fact that Clay hasn't won since early May, some extra starts against Double A hitters could be the best thing for him right now...
In MLB news, Major League Baseball and the World Umpires Association have officially agreed to implement instant replay and hope to have it in place by the end of the season. Every ballpark in the MLB is currently in the process (or has already undergone the process) of being wired for instant replay cameras. At least initially, umpires will use instant replay in the event of a disputable home run call (fair or foul, over or off the fence). All I know is if they use it in the Little League World Series, why shouldn't the MLB use it, as well?
