Beckett to DL; Bowden Gets the Call
Lot of action today in terms of injuries and roster moves. First, the relevant injury news:
Josh Beckett is headed to the DL retroactive to August 18th. Although Beckett's examination had "awesome" results (Beckett's own word) and apparently couldn't have gone any better, the Sox ultimately decided a few more days off couldn't hurt. Rumors have Beckett's trip being solely a matter of consolation for the Sox ace, who was said to be increasingly nervous over the tingling in his arm.
Sean Casey also landed on the DL retroactive to August 20th with a strained neck. Casey's injury is said to have originated from sleeping awkwardly, just as Beckett's injury was worsened by less-than-ideal sleep posture. Normally, a 15-day DL stint for Casey wouldn't hurt so much, but the Sox are currently pretty thin at the corners with Lowell also on the shelf.
To round out the day's trifecta, the Sox bumped Julio Lugo from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. He's eligible to return on September 10th, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to come back to the lineup. Lowrie's proven to be something of a revelation this season, whether the Sox currently view him as their long-term shortstop or not.
As for their replacements, the Sox purchased the contract of recently acquired catcher David Ross. Ross is likely to see his most time as a pinch-hitter as the Sox appear content with Kevin Cash as their primary backup. More importantly, Michael Bowden, the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization, will get the start against the ChiSox tomorrow. Bowden had an 0-3 record to go along with a 3.38 ERA in 6 starts at Triple A Pawtucket, but prior to his promotion, he had a 9-4 record with a 2.33 ERA in 19 starts at Double A Portland.
