Jackson Not in Receiver Mix According to Globe Source
Mike Reiss has some late breaking news in regards to the Pats' roster moves: Chad Jackson has apparently been informed that he will be released from the team. The fact that the move comes a day after the last wave of cuts likely means that the team was trying to trade Jackson and that no deal was worked out.
The 36th overall pick in 2006, Jackson had no shortage of talent but his problem was actually being able to stay on field to show off that ability. Injuries limited him to just 13 receptions in 14 career games with the Pats including zero catches in 2 games last year. Also, in spite of two-plus years in the league, he remains raw for a player of his experience level. A lot of people had high hopes for him this season - myself included - as he was progressing well in the preseason, leading many to believe that this could have been be the year he stepped up and nabbed a starting job (presumably from current third wideout Jabar Gaffney). However, with Ray Ventrone, C.J. Jones, Sam Aiken and Kelley Washington making the squad, Jackson became expendable. Look for him to wind up with another squad as it doesn't appear that he has practice squad eligibility anymore. I'd guess the Cowboys could scoop him up as any Hard Knocks fan can tell you that their receivers are dropping like flies. Cinci, Miami and Seattle will be among the possible suitors, as well.
Of course, many are now speculating that another deal of some sort is imminent as several of these cuts over the past 2 days are at least somewhat cap-friendly. Cornerback and linebacker would seem to be the two biggest needs at this point (with corner being a far bigger need), and with Ty Law and Junior Seau both still FAs, you can bet discussion of his possible return will be rampant. Other possibilities at corner include former Pats Hank Poteat and Ty Poole (with Poteat having a clear edge in both age and skill), as well as former Bengal Deltha O'Neal, among others.
UPDATE, 5:39 PM:
The Pats have also released John Lynch. It looks like Lynch could return after the first week, however, meaning that the move was made so the Pats wouldn't have to guarantee the $1.5 million Lynch was due and have it count against the cap. Smart move if Lynch is willing to come back after the first week of action, which seems to be the case at this point.
A pair of players were claimed, as well: Jets tight end Jason Pociask and Rams offensive tackle Mark LeVoir.
