Red Sox Weekly Recap 8/24 - 8/30
8/24 at Toronto Blue Jays (6-5 W 11th)
Dice-K (6 IP, 5 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) wasn't great, but the bullpen picked him up and kept them in it long enough for Lowrie to win it with a solo homer in the 11th. "Rusty" Masterson (shout-out to those goofy Olympia Sports commercials), Okie, Pap and Delcarmen combined to throw 5 innings of 1 hit, no-run ball. Other offensive highlights include a 3-run bomb from Dusty and a solo shot from Crisp.
8/26 at New York Yankees (7-3 W)
Game 1 of the last-ever Sox-Yanks series in the old Yankee Stadium couldn't have gone any better for the Sox. Wake (5 IP, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) got the win in his first start since coming off the DL, while Papi, Bailey and Bay provided the bulk of the offense with a combined 6 hits and 4 RBI. The Sox closed out the game with 4 more scoreless innings from the 'pen.
8/27 at New York Yankees (11-3 W)
Byrd's (6 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) third start with the Sox turned out to be his best as he picked up his 9th win of the year. (How'd the Yanks let this guy fall to the Sox?) The Sox put together 13 hits as a team with more than half (7, to be exact) coming from the top 3 in the lineup (Ellsbury, Pedroia, Ortiz). Pedroia hit his 15th homer of the season, while Bay hit his second triple.
8/28 at New York Yankees (3-2 L)
The power of the mustache compels you! The power of the mustache compels you! Or so believes Jason Giambi, who put the Yanks on his broad, steroid-enhanced shoulders and carried them to victory. Giambino was 2-2 with a homer and 3 RBI as a pinch-hitter. Lester (6.2 IP, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K) was lights out for most of the game, but he didn't factor into the decision after Okie gave up Giambi's homer.
8/29 vs. Chicago White Sox (8-0 W)
Excellent bounce-back start for Dice-K (8 IP, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K), who very well might have turned in his best performance of the season to improve to 16-2. (Worth noting that he's yet to throw a complete game with the Sox...) While Dice-K was on his way to limiting the ChiSox to 2 total hits, the BoSox were on their way to recording 15 hits as a team with Dusty, Papi, Youk, Cora and Tek all having multi-hit games.
8/30 vs. Chicago White Sox (8-2 W)
Two big stories in this one: first, Michael Bowden (5 IP, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) was called up and earned the win in his first-ever MLB start. Next, Pedroia - batting out of the cleanup spot - recorded his second straight 4-hit game, which helped raise his average to an AL-leading .327. Dusty seems to show his importance to the club in a different way every game, suggesting that all those "MVP" chants at Fenway may not seem so far-fetched when the actual voting rolls around.
