Red Sox Weekly Recap 8/31 - 9/6

8/31 vs. Chicago White Sox (4-2 L)
Decent start from Wake (6 IP, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), but his ChiSox counterpart Gavin Floyd (6.2 IP, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) was just too good today. Ellsbury had 3 hits batting leadoff and Dusty batted out of the cleanup spot, collecting just a single hitt. The big news in this one revolved around Jim Thome, who hit his 536th career home run, tying him with Yankees legend Mickey Mantle.

9/1 vs. Baltimore Orioles (7-4 W)
In spite of giving up 3 solo homers, Byrd (7 IP, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) was able to put together a solid performance and pick up his 10th win of the season. Byrd's contributions can't be emphasized enough; since coming over, he's started 4 games and won all but 1. Dusty collected 2 hits from his more familiar spot in the lineup (the 2 hole) and stole his 17th bag, while Tek connected on his 12th long ball of the season.

9/2 vs. Baltimore Orioles (14-2 W)
A good, old-fashioned blowout - just what the doctor ordered after a couple of close games. Lester (5 IP, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) wasn't as sharp as usual, but he didn't have to be with the Sox staking him to a 10-1 lead be the end of the 4th. The Sox did it with just one home run (courtesy of Dusty, batting out of the cleanup spot), but 3 guys (Dusty, Papi, Coco) had 3 hits apiece. They racked up 20 total hits and Dusty and Papi accounted for 9 of the team's 14 RBI between the two of them.

9/3 vs. Baltimore Orioles (5-4 W)
Seems all Dusty knows how to do these days is hit bombs out of the cleanup spot as he racked up another 3 hits and smashed his 17th homer of the season (20-20 season with reach). Dice-K (6 IP, 3 ER, 4 BB, 7 K) was a little wild, but he did just enough to keep the Sox in it long enough for them to come back and get Masterson the win.
Cora and Coco combined to have 5 hits.

9/5 at Texas Rangers (8-1 W)
How better to celebrate the return of two of the Sox' key contributors from the DL than by outscoring the league's highest-scoring offense by 7 runs? Beckett (5 IP, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K) was flat out dominant, and Lowell swung the big bat out of the 6 spot with 3 hits, a homer and 4 RBI. Coco collected another 3 hits and Tek even got in on the action with a pair of singles.

9/6 at Texas Rangers (15-8 L)
Wake (1.2 IP, 7 ER, 4 BB, 0 K) looked absolutely terrible, but he achieved a personal and professional milestone as he became just the 23rd pitcher in MLB history to make at least 350 starts for a team with which he'd appeared in 500 Major League contests. The Sox strung together 13 hits and had 3 players with 2 hits each, but a win wasn't in the cards for Wake on this historic evening.
