Red Sox Weekly Recap 9/7 - 9/13
9/7 at Texas Rangers (7-2 W)
A great outing from Byrd (6.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) and a pair of homers from Papi and Bay got the job done tonight. Always nice to see every starter record a hit, as well. Taylor Teagarden, a possible offseason target of the Sox, hit a home run for the hometown team.
9/8 vs. Tampa Bay Rays (3-0 W)
Kotsay had a pair of hits out of the leadoff spot, while Bay hit his second homer in as many days. Lester (7.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) was as lights out as we've come to expect and Pap finished off the Rays with 1.1 innings of 3 K ball. Continuing his torrid pace, Coco went 3-for-3 out of the 9-hole.
9/9 vs. Tampa Bay Rays (5-2 L)
If I've said it once, I've said it... well, more than once - all the Rays know how to do is mount comebacks in the 8th and 9th innings. This time they did it against arguably our best pitcher in Pap (1 IP, 2 ER, 0 K) in spite of the fact that Lowell hit his 16th of the year and Bay hit his 7th since joining the club.
9/10 vs. Tampa Bay Rays (4-2 L 14th)
If yesterday's loss was a heartbreaker, this one was akin to having your still-beating heart ripped out of your chest. The Sox found themselves in a 1-1 tie until the 14th, when Timlin (0.2 IP, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) proceeded to give up a 3-run bomb to hometown kid Carlos Pena. Ouch.
9/12 vs. Toronto Blue Jays (7-0 W)
Wake (8 IP, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) played the role of stopper en route to his 9th victory of the season. Helping him along the way were Papi, Lowrie and Cash, who accounted for all 7 of the runs batted in. Speaking of Cash, he cracked his 3rd homer of the year, a 3-run shot that scored Lowell and Lowrie.
9/13 vs. Toronto Blue Jays (8-1 L)
Byrd (5 IP, 5 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) got smacked around, while his Blue Jays counterpart A.J. Burnett (6 IP, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) looked every bit the ace he'll be paid like this coming offseason. Travis Snider did the bulk of the damage with a career-high 5 RBI. It was encouraging to see recent call-up and PawSox mainstay Devern Hansack pitch 3 clean innings while racking up 3 Ks.
9/13 vs. Toronto Blue Jays (7-5 W)
Colon (6 Ip, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) kept the Sox in it long enough to allow for a huge 8th inning comeback. Lowrie singled to right to tie the game, then an infield single from Ellsbury and an Ortiz double tacked on a pair of insurance runs. Pap picked up his 37th save of the season, tying last year's career high.
