Venerable Seau rejoins Patriots

It was only a matter of time. Hours after signing Rosevelt Colvin, the Pats further bolstered their weakened ranks at the linebacker position by adding former Patriot Junior Seau.

At this point, Seau seems to have become that ex-girlfriend whose number you keep in your cell because you always know there's at least a 75% chance of a late-night booty call to be had when things aren't going well for you, or that friend who keeps clinging to the group and putting up with non-stop shit-slinging at his or her direction because he or she wants a piece of the action to the Patriots. But in a good way. Was this not the next logical move? Pierre Woods, Tedy Bruschi and Vince Redd are all banged up (in addition to Adalius Thomas and Eric Alexander being out for the year), and Woods' status at this point is somewhat up in the air. Seau is a beast and has probably kept himself in as good a shape as if he was actually playing all this year, so he should be up to speed in minimal time. He's already familiar with the system (a terrible cliche, I know, but it is hugely important with the Pats' complex schemes) and even at 39, he should have fresh legs as he hasn't been playing at all.

If nothing else, it gives us the obligatory "excellent teammate, exceptional work ethic, coming back one more time to win that first championship" angle that so many sports writers salivate over. Plus, when you look at the alternatives - the Pats had previously been linked to Victor Hobbs, who they cut some months earlier - Seau easily makes the most sense out of the free agent crop out there right now.
