Weighing in on the Sean Avery "scandal"

First off, let me go on record as saying that no man insults both Elisha Cuthbert and Rachel Hunter with a single humorous albeit poorly-timed comment and lives to tell about it. So, Mr. Avery, know that I am coming after you. At least in the blogging world.

Moving on...

I just heard on 'EEI on the way home from the Judgment Free Zone (the absurd surname of the gym I frequent, Planet Fitness) that in addition to being suspended by the league for six games, Avery has been made to undergo some sort of psychological evaluation - and perhaps subsequent anger management training - for "conduct detrimental to the league or game of hockey." Wow.

Is this really what we've come to as a society? A relatively well-known athlete makes a semi-sexual comment and receives a six-game ban and anger management lessons? Yet another example of the "pussification" of America. Yeah, the comments were unnecessary and were ill-informed, but it was funny. And true.

Aren't hockey players supposed to able to spout off shit like this and get away with it? If Gary Bettman and the NHL are really trying to get viewers back and return hockey to its glory days, it's gonna take a lot more than a few rule changes that result in a faster-paced game and more goals being scored. And you know what? It starts right here. I'm not saying they should let every player get in front of a camera and say whatever the hell comes to mind, but maybe not suspending one of the more edgy players and just slapping him with a fine would have been more appropriate.
