Sox Winter Meetings up to this point
Not much action in the way of signings for the Sox, but they're certainly making inquiries at the very least. In addition, some guy named CC could be heading to the Bronx, so that will obviously have an effect on your beloved Boston boys. Here's a quick recap of the goings on in Sin City up to this point:
- As far as Mark Teixeira goes, the Sox would have to be considered the front-runners according to many sources in the know. However, rumors circulating from late today have the bidding war going as high or higher than $200 million, so it's likely the Sox wil pull out at some point in spite of the fact that he is clearly their highest priority. Some people are saying the Nationals are willing to go as high as 10 years, perhaps for more than $20 million per. Wowser.
- John Smoltz wants to pitch for a contender and has therefore added the Sox to his list of possible destinations. Other starters on the radar include AJ Burnett, Andy Pettite, Carl Pavano and Brad Penny, among others. The Sox will almost certainly check in on Derek Lowe, as well, but his price could well exceed how far they're willing to go with him.
- The Sox may have interest in Rocco Baldelli as a potential fourth outfielder, but they have some serious concerns over his stamina issue and are weary that he'd be able to fill in for substantial amounts of time. As a big fan of Baldelli's, I wouldn't mind seeing them take a chance here as long as the money is right.
- The Sox turned down a deal that would have had them send Michael Bowden to Arizona for catcher Miguel Montero. Smart decision from my vantage point. Montero's solid, but there's no way he'd live up to the "catcher of the future" label he'd be saddled with upon joining the Sox.
- The Giants have expressed interest in Mike Lowell, but he'll only be moved if the Sox land Teixeira. Maybe you might have heard, the Giants also just snatched up former Sox bust Edgar Renteria for two years and about $9 million per. Needless to say, a Lowell trade would probably be a better move.
- Pseudo-homosexual remarks of the Meetings go to Nolan Ryan, who said something along the lines of Clay Buchholz would look good in a Rangers uniform. As Buchholz is a Texas boy, Rangers president Ryan would love to see him playing for the Texas team, but it would likely take more than one of their remaining catchers to do so.
- Elite ace CC Sabathia has joined the Yankees. The deal is reportedly for $161 million over seven years. So much for that "leaving money on the table to pitch in the place he best likes" stuff we heard earlier this week. This move will definitely have implications for the Sox as the addition of Sabathia may have just helped them become the favorites in the East.
