Yanks sign Teixeira, offseason total now $423.5 million

In the end, all of us Red Sox fans have to have known this was coming. When John Henry commented that the Sox were out of the running - seemingly in a ploy to scare Boras - this whole thing fell apart. It was a good move by the Sox brass as they had their number and didn't want to go past that (and it also seems that the inclusion of a no-trade clause, which this ownership group historically hates to include, was a sticking point for Tex and Boras), but it just kills to see Teixeira end up in pinstripes. Baltimore, Washington, Los Angeles... no biggie. Yeah they would have had to deal with him if the Sox and Angels met up in October, but you can live with it because they're not in the division.

New York? Ouch.

In addition to the $180 million now committed to Teixeira (over 8 years), the Yanks already inked the offseason's two most highly coveted pitching free agents in C.C. Sabathia ($161 million over 7 years) and A.J. Burnett ($82.5 million over 5 years). This has to be some kind of record for offseason spending on just three guys. While I agree with the sentiment that they're throwing around money like it's going out of style - nearly half a billion in two weeks time - the Yanks did have over $80 million coming off the books, so the payroll should be roughly the same. Regardless, this kinda sucks. I don't mind so much that the Sox didn't get him because their Plan B (keeping Youk at first and hoping Lowell comes back healthy at third) is actually a lot better than people think, but like I said before, he could have ended up in a much better spot than New York.

Manny Ortez will be on soon to offer his take on the situation.
