Pats wheeling and dealing already

The Pats made a pretty nice free agent splash today, agreeing to a deal with corner Shawn Springs and trading to acquire receiver Greg Lewis.

The 33-year-old Springs, released recently by the Redskins, will come aboard and likely slide right into the first-string defense. In 12 years in the league, Springs has racked up 642 tackles (557 solos), 8.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles and 32 interceptions. He played just 9 games due to injury last season, but if healthy, he'll provide a valuable veteran presence on the defense. Perhaps most importantly, this finally gives the Pats a CB with height as Springs is listed at an even 6-feet. It will likely pan out better than that other big name signing the Pats took a chance on during the season (rhymes with Shmeltha Flobeal), and even though Springs turns 34 on March 11, he'll provide a nice boost to what is currently a sub-par CB corps.

As for Lewis, he's the prototypical Belichick player. He has just 56 catches over the past three years, but he's now the favorite to replace Gaffney as the third wide receiver and he can contribute immensely on special teams, as well. He doesn't have the name recognition of a Joey Galloway, but he could emerge as a solid contributor on the offense if he earns the chance. All in all, a good day at the office for Caserio and co.

When are we going to make TO an offer!?

Moss and TO on the same team... that would be insane!

Haha, good point man. I would fairly confidently predict that would be the best 1-2-3 combo in the history of the game. Unfortunately, I don't think even BB and the Pats can reform a lost cause like him. Plus, you know TO's asking price is going to be something silly like 10 mil per year over 3 years or something. It amazes me how some guys just cannot get their shit together regardless of the situation.

It is quite the prospect, though, Moss split out wide across from TO with Welker in the slot! Imagine how it would look if the Chiefs released Gonzalez and the Pats picked him up, too! All of Laurence Maroney's inadequacies would be forgotten about instantly...
