Would it Really Be That Bad if Theo Left?

UPDATE
It appears the Cubs have asked permission to speak to Theo about possibly coming to the Cubs.
The first thing I thought: being the active Red Sox GM, does Theo negotiate his own trade? Like is he burning the Cubs' phone playing hardball, saying he will only trade himself for Starlin Castro?
Probably.
Do it, Theo! You for Castro, straight up!
I was talking to my buddy yesterday, the only kid I know who played lacrosse that I didn't want to punch and kick in the face, and he told me to read Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback because it had some good stuff about Theo in it.
I was kind of hesitant because I think Peter King is kind of a pretentious doucher, but it was a good article. I only read the part about Theo because I have a personal limit on the amount of words I read a day so as not to become a geek ass nerd, but it was good stuff nonetheless.
Here are a couple of good points from it:
- Terry Francona, who managed the 2004 and 2007 World Series winners, parted ways with the Red Sox and their GM, Theo Epstein, whose major free-agent signings since 2005 are Edgar Renteria, Julio Lugo, J.D. Drew, Daisuke Matsuzaka, John Lackey, Marco Scutaro, Mike Cameron, Carl Crawford and Bobby Jenks.
- You can look it up: Since 2005, Epstein has signed those nine players to contracts totaling $462 million, with an additional $51.1 million paid to a Japanese team to acquire Matsuzaka. Of that $513 million spent, and those nine players, only Scutaro has been worth every dime of his contract — and his deal was only for two years and $12.5 million.
I don't think so.
If you think about it, Theo has had a LOT of BAD contracts during his tenure as GM of the Sox. They've already been named above, but some of those were just awful, awful signings.
At the same time, theoretically, Theo has to have one of the easier GM jobs in the MLB. He has an owner that gives him free reign to spend the 3rd most money in the MLB on legitimately whoever he wants.
Also, Boston has been an attractive destination for big-name free agents for like 10 years now so it's not like Theo has to sell these guys a ton.
Couple all of that with the report that came out yesterday saying that the Sox would likely want a lot in return if they were to get rid of Theo and you have to start thinking it might not be that bad if Theo left.
I mean, I could throw a ton of money at shitty free agents so there's gotta be a worthy GM out there that is capable of doing a comparable if not better job than good old Pearl Jam.
Just something to think about when you pretend to do work at work tomorrow.
